Here’s how to play:

You and your team (of up to 4 people) will play 4 rounds. Everyone will get a chance to spell a word each round. You must rotate through your own players. If you have 2 or 3 players, you will just rotate more often (teams must have at least two people).

You will face off, spelling bee battle style, against another team on the stage facing each other, one person repping from each team. In each round, teams will be paired off until every team has gone, and every person from each team has gone at least once.

Host will read you the word, and you will hit the buzzer/table if you think you can spell it. Once you hit the buzzer/table, you have 30 seconds to spell the word correctly. If you spell it correctly, you’ll gain points for your team! Be warned, if you spell it incorrectly, I’ll stop you mid-spell and you’ll lose points for your team! Think twice before hitting that buzzer/table 😉

Chance to steal! If you are the player that didn’t hit the buzzer/table but the opposing team player got the word wrong, you have 1 minute, and the option to ask for the word in a sentence, to spell the word correctly. If you spell it wrong, you will still lose points.

All teams have the option to choose not to spell the word in order to not lose points. In the case of a standoff (aka, no one hits the buzzer/table), hosts will read the word in a sentence. Once she completes the sentence, players in bee battle will have the chance to hit the buzzer and spell one more time. In the case that no one wants to answer, zero points will be given.

If there is an odd number of teams, the odd team out still send a team rep to the stage and that player will have one minute to spell the word, or choose to not answer in order to not gain or lose any points. If there is an odd number of teams, each team will rotate through being the odd team out.

The winning teams from each round (the teams with the most points) will play each other in the next round, similarly, losers will face each other.

Each round, you have the chance to earn back points and advance into the winning “brackets” and vice versa, go into the losers bracket if you lose points.

Let’s talk points. You have four rounds, four chances to earn points and get closer to QUEEN BEE status. Round words go up in difficulty each round!

Round 1 words are 100 point words. Each team has a chance to earn (or lose) up to 400 points

Round 2 words are 200 point words. Each team has a chance to earn (or lose) up to 800 points

Round 3 words are 300 point words. Each team has a chance to earn (or lose) up to 1,200 points

Round 4 words are 400 point words. Each team has a chance to earn (or lose) up to 1,600 points

Round 5 … BONUS ROUND! If we need tie-breakers (aka “Big Daddies”), this round’s words are worth 500 points.

Hosts will be keeping track of your team’s points, but you are welcome to keep track on your phone or notepad too.
